THREE years ago Paul Maiden entered a pub arm wrestling contest just for fun.

As a result he fell in love with the fast growing sport and is now Leigh's newest British champion.

Since that first competition he has worked his way through the ranks, winning numerous events before becoming British Novice Champion in 1999.

Next he entered professional class contests and his new title he says is due to a dedication and determination to succeed. His sights are now set on European and international titles.

Paul is senior trainer at Leigh Pulling Power, the arm wrestling club he co-founded with other team members Warren Bowdler, Stan and Keith Dickenson and Barry Knowles.

He said: "Although it is an Olympic recognised sport there is no funding from the government."

He is now appealing for a sponsor to help him achieve his new dream goals and is also training new hopefuls. Anyone interested can contact him on 01942 671212.

Five other team members who took placings in the British championships in Garstang were Warren Bowdler (third 65k left arm), Stan and Keith Dickenson (fourth and sixth respectively in the 100k right arm), Laura Bowdler (third 65k right arm) and Dawn Higson (fourth 65k right arm).
