A PLEA to old folk to have their electric blankets checked before winter arrives has been issued by trading standard bosses.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has teamed up with Age Concern in the borough to hold two testing sessions.

People with blankets which are more than three years old, or those who may have doubts about how safe their blanket is, can have them tested for free.

Two sessions are being held -- on Monday, October 14 at Darwen Town Hall and on Tuesday, October 15 at Blackburn Town Hall. Appointments can be arranged by calling 01254 266620.

Officers from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service will be on hand to advise on all aspects of fire safety as well as welfare rights staff, who will offer benefits advice to pensioners.

Chris Allen, head of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's Trading Standards and Advice Services, said: "The aim of testing is to take any dangerous blankets out of circulation. Last year, nearly half of all those examined either failed completely or needed repairing in order to be used safely.

"We are pleased to again to offer this valuable service, in partnership with our colleagues in Age Concern and Lancashire Fire Service."

Coun Maureen Bateson, Executive Member for Citizens and Consumer Rights, added: "Each year there are reports of serious injuries or even deaths caused by unsafe blankets, along with fires which cause major damage.

"The elderly and disabled members of our community are particularly at risk, and I am delighted to support this important initiative."
