STEVE Davis has watched the video nasty of his error at Bradford several times but now he is just desperate to put it all behind him.

And he was quick to praise his team mates and the staff for not giving him a hard time.

The Clarets skipper admitted: "My mistake cost us two points and I remember when I played the ball I shouldn't be doing it. I was very disappointed and I felt that I had let the lads down.

"It was my first game back from injury, we were coasting at 2-1 but we only ended up getting a point.

"No one has blamed me, the lads haven't given me any grief, the gaffer has been brilliant and I appreciate that but I know that I blame myself. Without that mistake we would have won."

Davis's biggest regret was that he has had to wait seven days for the first chance to put it right although he explained: "Even if we had been playing on Tuesday I don't know if I would have been in the team.

"I am under no illusions about getting straight back in the team because I know how well the lads have done.

"Coxy and Arthur have played well together as did Coxy and Mark McGregor.

"The first thing I have got to prove is that I am good enough to be in the side than I have got to prove that I am good enough to stay there."

His enforced absence with a calf injury following a challenge from Wolves Paul Ince has been particularly frustrating for the 33-year-old defender.

"After last year when I missed a big chunk of matches, it has been hard to be out longer than I thought I would be with my calf problem," he explained. "I need a good run of matches."

Davis knows he would have benefited from a run out in the reserves but there was no game this week and he has had to concentrate on training hard at Gawthorpe.

"It has been a good week and I am closer to full fitness than I was last week, although I am not yet 100 per cent," he explained.

"That can only come through playing games and I might have played against Bury the week before if it had not been a match at Radcliffe Borough."

Davis hopes he will be involved against the Dons as their keeper Kelvin Davis is a friend from his Luton days and another player to have had a high profile error recently, his gaffe conceding a goal at Portsmouth.

"He is an outstanding keeper but if you are a keeper and you make a mistake it invariably ends in a goal," he said. "He is a good lad and we have not spoken about our mistakes - yet."

It may not be certain that Davis will start against the Dons tomorrow but he says you can bet on one thing.

"If I get the ball at the back like I did against Bradford, it is only going in one direction - as far upfield as possible," he admitted with a wry smile.

Some lessons are very painfully learned.
