BLACKBURN midfielder David Thompson today warned his Rovers team-mates to wise up after Tottenham became the latest team to storm Ewood.

Rovers' weakness for shipping late goals struck again as Jamie Redknapp snatched a dramatic victory for the Londoners with a last-gasp strike.

It was the fourth time in recent weeks that Graeme Souness's side have thrown away precious Premiership points in such a manner.

And an impatient Thompson insists Rovers must start to learn from those painful lessons or face the prospect of getting sucked into a fight at the wrong end of the table over the next few months.

"We've got to learn to kill games off and sometimes settle for a point because we can't keep on conceding late goals like that," said Thompson.

"Sometimes we have to say to ourselves 'we are just not going to win this game' and shut up shop.

"That's what all the best teams do, so maybe we should take a leaf out of their book because it's becoming a bit of a worry for us.

"We've thrown away points against Middlesbrough, Chelsea, Manchester City and now Spurs and that's a major disappointment.

"In this league, performances don't really matter, it's all about results because that's the be all and end all."

Rovers appeared to be suffering from a European hangover during a lacklustre first half as their trip to Sofia last week took its toll.

But a spirited second half fightback, led by Thompson, seemed to have earned Rovers a share of the spoils until Redknapp adminstered the ultimate sucker punch.

"The trip to Bulgaria took an awful lot out of us physically and we didn't really get going in the first half," said Thompson.

"I, personally, was exceptionally tired but I felt the least we deserved was a point."

Those thoughts were also echoed by manager Graeme Souness who was left to rue what might have been.

"At 1-1, I was certainly thinking we'd done enough to get a point but a fluke goal from them at the death won it and good luck to them," said the Rovers boss.

"When you are playing on a Thursday night and then you've got four hours to travel there is always going to be some sort of reaction.

"But in saying that, in the second half I thought we did do enough to win the game and on another day we would have won it with that kind of effort and that kind of play."

To cap a disappointing afternoon, David Dunn also picked up a hamstring injury which wrecked any hopes of him being picked for England.

And striker Andy Cole also had to be substituted at half time after feeling the effects of his groin problem.

Thompson also missed out on an England call despite his excellent form for Rovers since his £1.5 million move from Coventry.

But, despite his obvious disappointment at the amount of points his new club are currently throwing away, he is still enjoying every minute of his time at Ewood.

"I'm delighted how things have gone since my move from Coventry," added Thompson.

"We've got a heck of a squad here but we've been unlucky with injuries since the start of the season and that's not helped our cause.

"Once we get Dwight Yorke back and we can get a settled side again then I have no doubts we can be a forced to be reckoned with in this league."
