GOAL ace David Nugent is hoping for a chance of revenge when Shakers' LDV Vans Trophy adventure continues writes Chris Hall

Bury's name will go into the hat for the Northern Area semi-final draw on Saturday after Nugent and strike partner Jon Newby steered them to a 2-0 upset of Tranmere Rovers in midweek.

With a place at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium just two wins away, most fans and even players will be hoping to avoid drawing Crewe Alexandra, who emphaised their strength with an 8-0 pounding of Doncaster on Tuesday.

But Nugent is desperate for a clash with the Railwaymen after being snubbed by the Cheshire outfit before joining Bury.

"I spent about six weeks on trial at Crewe when I was 15," he explains.

"But they said they needed an athlete and didn't take me on. I was shocked because I always thought I was an athlete. I even used to run 1,500m races for my school.

"So I would like to get my own back on them and show them what I can do."

The 17-year-old prodigy certainly gave Tranmere more than a glimpse of his talent, with a dazzling and tireless display which had Rovers' experienced defenders chasing shadows.

And his endeavour in attack and defence was rewarded with the second goal of his senior career - of which he is immensely proud.

"I'm delighted that we've made the semi-finals and it was great to get another goal," he said.

"Newbs (Jon Newby) made a great run and I just dropped off the defender when he crossed it. I hit it first time and the 'keeper got his hand to it but, thankfully, it went in.

"Now we're just a couple of wins from Cardiff and everyone's really excited."

Such a contribution would earn most players a starting place for Saturday's Division Three clash away to promotion rivals Scunthorpe. But modest Nugent, being cautiously nurtured by manager Andy Preece in these early stages of his career, is resigned to warming the bench for much of the game.

"I'm sure I will be a substitute again on Saturday but that doesn't bother me at all," he said.

"I'm well ahead of where I had expected to be at this stage of my career and I'm just enjoying the chances when they come along.

"It can be hard to come on for just ten minutes at the end of a game and try and make an impact but I'm not too worried about that. As long as I get my win bonus, I'm happy!"

The LDV Trophy Northernsemi-finals draw takes place on Sky Sport at 10.30am on Saturday.
