I WOULD like to ask Councillor Dave Smith (Letters, December 9) or any other councillor how do immigrants and asylum seekers qualify for benefits and everything they need when they haven't paid a penny into the system.
I am an 82-year-old widower who fought six very long, hard years, in a war to keep this country of ours. What a joke on us!
I've paid my own way in this town and country all my life. I've had the immense sum of 75p for nothing and that was five shillings a week on the dole as a 14-year-old.
Last year, I asked for help to have my bungalow cavity wall and loft insulated. A man brought a form from the town hall. I filled it in and had to send it to Newcastle.
Back came the reply that because I don't claim benefit, I don't qualify.
So, Councillor Smith, why should I vote for any of the main parties?
J EAVES (Mr), Heys Close, Blackburn.
