BONGS bangers blew the opposition away in a prestigious sausage competition.
Tyldesley butcher Mike Hilton's pedigree sausages had the judges squealing in appreciation at the National Festival of Meat event at Smithfield Market.
Using pork ingredients from farmer Steve Richardson's Tyldesley rare Middle White pigs he scooped top awards.
Farmer Richardson and his 15 year-old son, Mark, specialise in rare breeds at Bank House Farm and their porkers provided just the right flavour to gain most votes.
The Richardsons' Middle White pigs include seven breeding sows of a national total of just 350.
Steve says philosophically: "They are rare but if people didn't eat them, nobody would keep them and the breed would die out."
Steve entered the British Pig Association's sausage competition topping the speciality section with his chives, chestnut and herb flavoured offerings.
Delighted with the results the Mort Lane farmer said: "Mick's sausage are second to none."
Next year Steve is hoping for more success with his Middle White pigs and British White cattle after great results at the Royal Lancashire, Great Yorkshire, Cheshire and Royal Welsh shows.
