A CONGESTION-busting new bridge costing £2million is set to get the go-ahead tonight.

Councillors sitting on Blackburn with Darwen Council's planning and highways committee have been asked to approve the project between Eanam and Furthergate, Blackburn.

The new bridge would run parallel to the existing one which leads out towards Accrington Road. It will carry outbound Traffic and include a new bus lane.

The existing bridge will be converted and used for incoming traffic and also include a bus lane.

Accrington Road is one of Blackburn's traffic hotspots. Traffic bosses at the council believe queues are caused because cars are currently unable to pull past buses when they stop to pick up passengers.

Under the new plan, buses would have their own lane, helping them get in and out of town more quickly while reducing blockages for regular traffic.

A report to the committee states: "The existing road will also be widened to help reduce congestion."
