THERE can't be many people who, in their sixties, decide to embark on a completely new career. We're not talking a simple change here, folks; more the start of a demanding, time-consuming and, yes, probably hazardous business venture.

However, drummer Chas Hooper, whose shop in Belthorn near Blackburn has for many years been a hugely popular outlet for percussionists of all shapes, sizes and abilities, has decided to become a publican.

There's a wonderful tale behind this somewhat extreme change of direction.

Chas had for some time been looking for a more central location for his drum shop.

The Pilkington Arms in Derby Street, Bolton, came on the market and Chas, drawn to it like a magnet, made a successful bid.

The original intention to turn it into a swish drum store evaporated in the days following his assessment of the somewhat dilapidated property.

"It just welcomed me like a long-lost mate," Chas mused.

Now, after many weeks of hard work on restoration, in which he shed several stones and rediscovered a passion for "involvement and total commitment", the Pilkington Arms is open for business under its new landlord.

However, drummers needn't worry about losing out. Chas intends to open his shop above the pub and is in the process of transferring the mountain of stock from Belthorn to Bolton.

And there's more good news.

Chas will capitalise on his contacts in the music world to put on regular Wednesday jazz nights at the Pilkington Arms and already John Hargreaves, one of the finest and most popular vocalists in the North West, has appeared there, as have keyboards "giants" Steve Moore, Peter Lingwood and Norman Bolton.

And he will continue to lead his own band, the excellent Chas Hooper Swing Six, who have played a number of Jazz Festivals this year, including Wigan and Morecambe.

Friends who know and respect Chas for his vibrant personality, honesty and warmth will wish him every success in his new venture.

It's probably the only place in the world where you can buy a drum kit and have a pie and a pint as well!
