MICK Sawdon is on the verge of quitting his post as manager of high-flying Highfield United despite their magnificent start to the season.

The Air Miles Manchester League outfit currently top the Division One table, with a great chance of promotion to the Premier League, while their second team are also second in their division.

But Sawdon has reached breaking point over the mountain of extra duties dumped on his shoulders and warned he will walk if volunteers can not be found to lighten the load.

Not only does Mick carry all the responsibility for the team's performance on the field but he also doubles up as the club physio, secretary and groundsman.

And, with his own carpet and windows business to take care of, he admits he can not continue much longer.

"The usual match day starts off with me sorting the kit out and getting the pitch ready by rolling and cutting the grass, marking it out and putting the nets up," he said.

"If we are away from home, I have to sort out the transport and away from match days I have to deal with the league, confirm matches and attend league meetings

"All this is taking away from my work with the team and this is a very high standard of football. We have a fine nucleus of players but if things carry on as they are we won't just slide down the league but out of it completely. That's how serious this is."

"I have brought it to a head now because I have a business and a family of my own to think of. If something doesn't happen soon, I will have to go."

Highfield, who play at Seedfield Sports Centre, off Walmersley Road in Bury, are now calling on volunteers to help avert the club's decline.

Anyone who can help prepare the pitch, work as team physio or lend a hand off the field should contact Jackie Lomax on 0161 7633092.
