A NEWLY-opened community law centre is offering free legal advice.

Bury Law Centre, in Knowsley Street, is aimed at representing and giving advice to people who would not normally use solicitors because of cost, or uncertainty of their rights.

Practice manager Alayne Turner said its services would be targeted at people with the greatest need. She said: "We are offering legal services to meet the needs of local people who, for whatever reason, suffer disadvantage.

"Priority will be given to people on low incomes or benefits, suffering oppression, ethnic minorities, or those who are unfamiliar with the legal system. Gaps have been identified in legal service provision in Bury by the Legal Services Commission."

The law centre has been set up with assistance from the Commission and Bury Council. Areas covered include employment, housing, immigration, asylum, mental health and community care law.

Appointments can be made by contacting the law centre on 272 0666, by e-mail on info@burylawcentre.co.uk or through drop-in sessions on Tuesdays from 1pm to 4pm.
