PROBLEMS at Burnley's Towneley Golf Course are about to be tackled.

At a meeting of the council it was revealed that the municipal club is losing members and revenue because of the condition of the course.

Coun Peter Doyle said: "The one and only Towneley Golf Club is a major issue in Burnley. We are losing money and members and the condition of the course does not seem to be getting any better.

"I want to know what is being done to improve the situation."

Because of a problem with drainage at the course. members may be leaving for alternative clubs nearby.

Coun David Hegginbotham claimed that members of Towneley have left for Nelson's Marsden course.

He said: "That course has been improved to such an extent it is poaching our customers from Burnley.

"We have got to look at the management of the course very closely."

In response to the criticisms of Towneley, Coun Barry Gutteridge, the council's executive member for leisure, said: "We have had an inspection of the golf course and a meeting to discuss what we have seen.

"There are options for a short-term and a long-term plan. We need to address the issue and make the greens look pleasant for the coming summer.

"There have been problems with drainage and that will be sorted this winter."
