A PERMANENT memorial is to be erected in Darwen to remember on one of the town's most influential community champions.

And people with ideas about how to mark the life of Howard Peters are being urged to get in touch and have their say.

The ex-pupil of Darwen Technical school died in July after devoting 50 years to working in and for the town.

Mr Peters, 89, was formerly a magistrate, as well as a president of Darwen Rotary Club and member of the local Lloyd's Trust. He was involved with the Civic Society and Parkinson's Disease Society, while also a founder member of the 10th Darwen Scouts.

A memorial fund was established to keep his memory alive in Darwen. And his popularity and standing within the community was reflected when more than 300 people attended a memorial service at St Peter's Church in October.

Fundraisers have collected £373 so far and are urging more people to give to the fund.

Geoff Tolley, of Knave Close said: "We don't have any ideas of what we are going to do to remember his life as yet. That is why we are appealing to the public to help us out with this one.

"There has been a number of things mentioned but we haven't made any decisions as yet.

" We are hoping to have a meeting in March to look at what it will be. We want the memorial to be placed somewhere where a lot of Darwen people walk by."

People can call Geoff Tolley on 01254 774929 with any suggestions.
