THE £2.8 million Prospects Centre of Bury College was officially opened on Wednesday.

Unveiling the plaque was Mrs Frances Done, the chief executive of Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games. The ceremony was also attended by 60 guests including Mr Fred Bowen, chairman of the college's board of governors, and the mayor and mayoress of Bury Councillors John and Stella Smith.

The centre has been named "Prospects" to reflect the college's expectations of success for students, future students, clients and staff. Situated on the main college campus, the centre provides teaching and learning facilities for business studies and a range of technologies including papermaking, electronics, electrical installation, e-commerce and multi-media.

Mrs Done said: "I am extremely proud to officially name the Prospects Centre. Effective use of technology and the Internet were fundamental in the success of the Commonwealth Games. This centre has outstanding resources, support and technological back-up, giving students a wonderful opportunity to learn and develop new skills and ultimately to be successful in their chosen careers."

College principal Dr Helen Gilchrist added: "Students and staff are thrilled with their new surroundings and we have had excellent feedback from those using the centre."
