THE achievements of pupils at Edge End High School, Nelson were recognised at its annual presentation evening, attended by proud parents and official guests.

The guest of honour for the evening was Nighat Awan, chief executive of the Shere Khan group. Also in attendance was Coun Pauline McCormick, the Mayor of Pendle.

Headteacher Martin Burgess said the number of GCSE passes per pupil were the best ever..

Reala Ahmed, Amy Hill, Fauzia Kauser, Samantha Lyle, Natalie Stacey and Rachel Wharton were mentioned for their outstanding GCSE results.

Another exceptional pupil singled out for special praise was Zaberjad Iftikhar, who gained the school's first exceptional performance in the key stage 3 English SATS.

The successes of the school's cricket, basketball and football teams were also mentioned.

Mr Burgess said: "This is the tenth presentation evening speech I have made since I became headteacher and I am as proud as ever of my school, its staff and above all its pupils."

Meanwhile, students at the School had a crash course on the decks.Ten young people from the school were given hands-on experience by David Blaxhall, who runs the training company The Radio Surgery.

They were shown the operation of studio equipment, how to project themselves on the air, script reading and interviewing techniques.
