A DRUNK man, involved in late night trouble in Burnley, couldn't believe how he had behaved when later he was awakened in a police cell.

The town's magistrates heard how Kevin Smith, 24, had not the remotest idea where he was or what he was doing there.

He was so embarrassed to read reports of what he had done he felt the person described wasn't him.

Smith, who had been aggressive towards a policewoman and unruly more than once on his night out, was fined £200 with £55 costs.

The defendant, of Cog Lane, Burnley, admitted threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. He was told by the bench: "We don't want to see you here again."

Dermot Woodhead, defending, said Smith thought his drinks had been spiked.

Comments had been made to him by people who were known to take substances. The defendant had suffered a complete loss of memory.

The solicitor said he was not talking about a situation where things were just a bit cloudy to Smith. He had woken up in a police cell with not the remotest idea of where he was.
