AN elderly woman died after she was injured in an accident with a car as she crossed a road in Leigh.

The pedestrian, aged 84, who has not been named, was crossing Wigan Road, near its junction with Norbury Street, when the accident happened at about 6.20pm yesterday.

She suffered serious multiple injuries and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital where she later died.

The N registered blue Ford Escort car was driven by a 42-year-old local man.

In a seperate incident an 85-year-old man from Chorley was killed instantly after being injured in a collision with a car on the M61 motorway on Saturday.

Police had minutes earlier received a flood of calls from anxious motorists who had spotted the elderly man wandering across the M61 motorway in the dark.

Thomas Foster was reported missing from High Grove House, a residential home in Chorley, earlier on Saturday.

At 4.40pm, Mr Foster is believed to have been walking south on the northbound carriageway of the motorway close to Chorley.

An Austin Montego being driven by a motorist from Lancaster collided with Mr Foster on the carriageway.

Police closed the motorway from Junction 6 at Horwich to junction 8 at Chorley for three hours.
