ROSSENDALE Council has been experimenting with different coloured bins in a bid to encourage householders to cut waste in the borough.
The scheme is part of the authority's "waste not want not" recycling scheme which it hopes will cut the amount of waste which goes into landfill sites.
Councillors said there had been an excellent response to the project with 56 tons of recyclable materials collected in the first week.
The different coloured bins are being used to encourage people to recycle bottles, paper and household waste in a more efficient way, rather than dumping them in one bin.
Victor Bennet has been appointed project officer to oversee the running of the environmentally-friendly project.
Blue bins are now being delivered to homes throughout the valley, with blue boxes and paper bags being delivered this month.
