UNIBOND Premier League leaders Stanley maintained their nine point lead at the top table despite defeat but will rue letting three points slip at Watnall Road.

The first half proved to be an even affair with neither side being able to make a break through.

However, that pattern was changed just a minute into the second period when Danny Mayman shot mid-table Hucknall into the lead.

Accrington hit back almost instantly with an equaliser just two minutes later.

Winger Dean Calcutt curled in a free-kick which deceived both defenders and attackers alike and found its way into the Town net - though Stanley striker Paul Mullin claimed that he had gained the final touch.

Stanley looked as though they would be in the ascendancy for the closing stages as Hucknall were down to ten men on 72 minutes when Craig Gaunt was sent off for a professional foul.

However, it wasn't to be as depleted Town scored the winner nine minutes from time.

Former Barnsley player Clint Marcelle struck the killer goal with a volley from the edge of the box.

Despite the defeat there was a bonus for Stanley who brought on their new signing Rory Prendergast, captured from Bradford Park Avenue.

The 23-year-old winger came on just after half time and put in a very impressive display.

Stanley now look to put their chase for the title back on track with a Boxing Day trip to Whitby.
