REPRESENTATIVES from public services such as the police, the armed forces and Lancashire Fire and Rescue will be talking to young people at a careers recruitment day in Nelson.

It will be held at Nelson Jobcentre Plus, in Netherfield Road, on Saturday, January 18, between 10am and 3pm and supported by staff at Colne Jobcentre Plus. Lancashire Probation Service, Lancashire Ambulance Service and the Faculty of Health from the Education Centre based at Blackburn Royal Infirmary will also be represented..

The event is aimed at anyone interested in joining the public services, particularly people from the borough of Pendle, and at actively promoting careers in the services to the ethnic minority community and to those from deprived areas.

It is being held as a result of two recent jobs fairs held at Blackburn Jobcentre Plus, where more than 1,500 attended.

A spokesman for the emergency services said: "We were overwhelmed by the response from the Blackburn jobs fairs and feel that events such as these are essential for breaking down barriers people might have to joining any of the services.

"We encourage people to come along and talk to us about any fears or apprehensions they might have to joining the services."

The event at Nelson will be followed by similar events throughout East Lancashire.

Anyone wanting to know more about the event should contact office manager Ann Sharrock on 01282 663300.
