KNOWLEDGE-hungry children can't get enough of arithmetic.

Pupils at St Thomas' in Leigh are even turning-up early for a spot of breakfast schooling in the primitive art of sums.

The magnet drawing an ever-increasing number of children to pre-school lessons is an exciting new programme -- RM Maths Portfolio -- launched throughout the authority and now being introduced into Leigh EAZ schools.

A forerunner to the inspiring technology of MathsAlive the computer-based programme is designed for primary pupils as an enrichment to early years learning in mathematics.

The Breakfast Club has proved a stunning success during the trial launch with 17 regular early birds.

And extra lessons have already been scheduled for lunchtime.

"Many of our pupils prefer to do extra maths classes than take their play period," said the Bedford school's ICT lead teacher Ann Packwood.
