LEIGH Harriers have scored a double victory.

They have won a £10,000 grant for sprint track improvements and the honour of hosting the county schools' cross country championships for the first time.

The grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts will go towards the cost of repairing and overlaying the 100m six lane tartan track, laid 10 years ago at the Charles Street ground which caters for 200 members.

Work should start in spring ready for use at the start of the outdoor season.

Harriers' spokesman Joe Galvin is delighted with the award and the fact that the cream of all the Greater Manchester schools' cross country runners will be vying for titles on February 1 at Marshall Street.

He said: "Organising the championships is a feather in the cap for the club, it's also good for Leigh and the borough."

Over 300 athletes will compete in eight age groups starting at 10.45am and finishing at 1.15pm over distances ranging from 2-7k.

The first eight in each race will represent their county in the English Schools' championships.
