Rovers Cardiff dream crushed

FULL TIME: Rovers 1-3 Utd. Rovers go out of the Worthington Cup 4-2 on aggregate, which will see Utd play Liverpool in the final.

21:52: Utd are playing the clock down.

21:51: Two minutes of added time.

21:51: Veron and beckham playt the ball between themselves and the ball is worked through to Forlan and his shot is turned round the post by Friedel.

21:49: Only a couple of minutes to go.

21:49: Neville breaks down the right hand side and his ball is met by Forlan but he doesn't get any power on the shot.

21:48: Barthez takes a dead ball kick and the game is beginning to wind down.

21:46: Cole tries to break through the Utd defence - but Brown and Ferdinand close the door.

21:46: Rovers are pushing forward but Thompson sums up the night with a tired shot that Barthez easily collects.

21:45: Sub for Utd sees Van Nistelrooy off for Forlan.

21:44: A heavy tackle by Thompson on Neville sees the winger get a yellow card with just over five minutes to go.

21:43: Rovers are pushing but they have not had a clear site of the Utd goal in this second half.

21:40: Sub for Utd sees Scholes come off for Butt.

21:39: Just over ten minutes to go, it does look as though Van Nistelrooy was offside.

21:38: Utd lead 4-2 on aggregate, Souness is livid on the touchline, he thought Van Nisteelroy was offside when he collected the pass.

21:37: GOAL - Rvrs 1-3 Utd. Van Nisteelroy scores and Utd look Cardiff bound.

21:37: Van Nisteelroy breaks through the Rovbers defence and is one on one with Friedel, under a challenge from the keeper the ref gives a penalty.

21:36: Thompson gets the ball over and Todd challenges but it is cleared by Brown.

21:35: A free kick to Rvrs is played short to Tugay and Gillespie works down the right and his ball back to Taylor sees Silvester knock the ball out for a corner.

21:34: Beckham some how gets away with a hand ball that sees him play the ball through to Van Nisteelroy but Rovers get a challenge in and the ball is cleared.

21:32: Rovers win another corner after Neville chests the ball out - but the delivery is all wrong and it goes out.

21:31: Yorke works his way down the left and his cross is dropped upon by Barthez on his six yard line.

21:31: The ball is collected by Tugay but his pass is blocked and then Todd gets a challenge in.

21:30: McEveley works his way down the left but his cross is watched out by Barthez.

21:29: Brown has the ball in his own half and he sends it long towards Van Nisteelroy but Todd gets a challenge in and it goes back to Friedel.

21:27: The ball is headed clear by Taylor.

21:27: Utd are breaking again down the left and Giggs shoots, Friedel again comes to the rescue of Rovers and the ball goes out for a corner.

21:26: Utd pile down through the Rovers defence on the break and Keane blasts in a shot that Friedel somehow gets a hand on.

21:25: Gillespie puts a ball over but it is deflected and lands in Barthez's hands.

21:24: Rvrs 1-2 Utd. Rovers are trying to crank up the pressure.

21:24: Gillespie gets downt the wing and his cross lands on Thompson's head - a difficult chacne really.

21:23: The cross is eventually cleared, and Van Nisteelroy works the ball to the edge of the box and the Rovers defence gets it away.

21:22: Blackburn have to push forward and they have earnt another corner.

21:22: The ball is sent across and Cole gets his head on it, but Barthez somehow gets ball away from point blank range and it goes out for a corner - that comes to nothing.

21:21: Fifteen minutes gone of second half and Rvrs have earnt a free kick close to Utd corner flag.

21:20: The pace has dropped a little as things stand Blackburn are still in this game.

21:19: Gillespie gets past four Utd players but his cross falls to Tugay who is crowded out and the play breaks down.

21:19: Utd get a cross into the Rovers box but no one is there and the ball breaks all the way down to the Utd box.

21:18: The ball is played long by Beckham but it goes straight through to Friedel.

21:16: Tugay works the ball through to Cole but Barthez gets to the ball just infront of the Rovers striker.

21:14: The referee is trying to calm things down, penalty calls at both ends of the pitch have added a bit oof spice to the game.

21:13: McEveley gets down the left and his cross slams into Keane - shouts of hand ball but the ball breaks quickly and Utd put the Rovers defence under pressure.

21:12: Utd are asking most of the questions with Scholes seeing plenty of the ball.

21:11: Five minutes gone in the second half.

21:10: Gillespie breaks through the Utd half but he over runs the ball and any threat is snuffed out.

21:10: Veron tries to get a shot in the ball rebounds away but a shot from Giggs gets through and Friedel drops to flick the ball clear - a vital save.

21:09: Ball is cleared but Utd collect and again put the Rvrs defence under pressure who clear it for anotehr corner.

21:08: First corner of the second half to Utd is won by Giggs.

21:08: The ball has gone out for a throw to Utd, but it is played back to Barthez.

21:06: Utd gain pocession and Sylvestre gets a cross in but it flies over the bar.

20:49: Half-time: Rvrs 1-2 Utd. Despite a great start by Rovers, Utd have slowly forced their way back into the game, to put themselves in the driving seat.

20:47: Yorke and Cole are struggling to get the ball down and play it to their team mates.

20:47: Thompson has moved out onto the left with Gillespie on the right.

20:45: Souness will be hoping for the whistle to blow for the end of the first half - a minute to go.

20:43: GOAL - Rvrs 1-2 Utd. Beckham gets down the right and his deep cross is smashed home by Scholes.

20:42: Friedel clears the ball long and it is collected by Tugay, his ball is collected by Yorke, but there is a late flag that stops the play for offside.

20:40: Cole and Yorke work the ball out to Gillespie but his cross into the box is cleared by Ferdinand, Neill collects but his cross is picked off by Barthez.

20:39: Beckham gets the ball but his cross is collected by Friedel.

20:38: The ball is headed away by Taylor, and Cole challenges for the ball with Beckham but it goes out for a throw.

20:38: Scholes breaks through into the Rovers box but Taylor gets back and the ball is cleared for a corner.

20:37: A cross by Beckham is picked up by Van Nisteelroy who gets ashot in towards the bottom left hand corner - but Friedel gets across to pull off a cracking save.

20:35: Sub for Rovers sees Duff off for Gillespie - 35 mins gone.

20:35: A change seems imminent for Rovers as Duff is calling to be subbed.

20:34: Thirty-three minutes gone of the first half, Utd are now beginning to crank up the pressure.

20:33: The game is all square, on the night and on aggregate the scorer of the next goal will be key.

20:32: Scholes got a shot in but it was stopped, but he got onto the rebound and pushed the ball over the line.

20:31: GOAL - Rvrs 1-1 Utd. Scholes scrambles a ball over the line after a deep cross by Neville.

20:30: Utd have forced themselves a corner but the ball is cleared again and Flitcroft ends up challenging Veron heavily in the middle of the Rovers half.

20:29: The ball is cleared by the Utd defence and Rovers collect the ball at the back to clear the ball back into the Utd half.

20:28: From the free kick Thompson breaks down the line and his cross is scrambled away for a Rovers throw-in.

20:28: Veron puts a heavy challenge in on Thompson and Souness runs from the bench to protest.

20:26: McEveley and Duff get the ball down the left but the ball through to Cole sees the striker blown up for offside.

20:25: The ball is played long through Rvrs defence but it is watched out by Friedel who plays the ball long from a goal kick.

20:24: Rovers are playing the ball quickly over the top of the Utd defence keen to turn Brown and Ferdinand.

20:23: Utd attack down the left and Silvestre gets a ball over but it is cleared and the ball ends up going all the way back to Barthez, Rovers are looking strong at the back.

20:22: Twenty minutes gone.

20:21: Cole is playing very weel he is up for this one.

20:20: Rvrs 1-0 Utd. Cole's first goal against Manchester United.

20:19: Cole again breaks down the left but his left footed shot is just wide of the post - Rovers and looking strong, Utd are failing to find each other.

20:18: The corner is flicked on at the near post and the ball flies past Utd's far post.

20:17: Flitcroft passes the ball wide to McEveley who plays the ball to Duff and his cross gets a deflection that is tipped over the bar by Barthez.

20:16: Utd are pressing Rovers and it needs some cool defending by Taylor to clear the ball down to Cole and York to try and ease a bit of the pressure.

20:15: The CIS Stand at Ewood Park is rocking after Cole's goal - fifteen minutes gone.

20:14: GOAL - Rvrs 1-0 Utd. The ball is played long to Cole who plays it out to Tugay whose pass is collected by Cole and chipped over Barthez - cracking goal.

20:12: A sharp inter-change of passes by Utd almost gets Giggs through but Neill gets back to challenge and the ball breaks to Friedel.

20:11: The ball is collected by the Utd defence and it is played back to Barthez.

20:11: A throw by McEveley breaks down and the ball falls to Van Nistelrooy but he is strongle challenged by Flitcroft who comes away with the ball.

20:10: McEveley brings the ball down and plays it out to Duff whose cross causes problems in the Utd defence and they are keeping the pressure up on the edge of the Reds box.

20:08: Duff breaks through the middle and he plays it out to Thompson but his cross is played away - a good chance for Rovers that is wasted.

20:07: Utd subs are warming up on the touch line - a possible change may be forced.

20:07: Giggs again gets away down the left but his shot is weak and collected by Friedel.

20:05: Brown has the ball deep in his own half and the opening few minutes of the game have been very quiet - despite the fans creating a great atmosphere.

20:05: Giggs breaks down the left and gets behind the Rovers defence but his first touch is poor and his cross-shot is easily played away by Todd.

20:04: The ball breaks from the throw-in and it is played back to Friedel who kicks the ball long down the pitch.

20:03: Neill collects tha ball but he is challenged and it goes out for a throw.

20:03: Van Nistelrooy gets an early shot away but it is collected easily by Friedel.

20:01: Man Utd are attacking the Darwen End and they kick-off.
