BLACKPOOL Zoo is set to become a world-class experience with a £5 million cash injection over the next 10 years.

The appointment of private company Grant Leisure Limited who tendered to take over the running of the 32-acre zoo from April, was approved at last night's, Wednesday January 22, council meeting.

Blackpool Council announced its intention to sell the zoo's lease in June last year and since that time has been in negotiation with Grant Leisure. The company have pledged to invest £5 million over an initial 10-year lease period and have promised to double that amount if the lease is extended.

Grant Leisure have worked on leading wildlife attractions such as The Zoological Society of London, Woburn Safari Park and The Zoological Society of San Diego. The company aim to transform the resort's existing attraction into a top tourist destination by developing the animal welfare facilities, enhancing the visitor experience and creating additional themed attractions on site. Andy Grant, Grant Leisure chief executive, believes the foundations for future success are in place.

"The zoo's management team has created a very good foundation for the creation of a truly world class zoological garden," he said.

"Our vision is to create a destination where animals, education and entertainment are successfully combined in a pleasing and stimulating environment."

Cllr Roy Fisher, leader of the council, described the deal as a "win-win situation".

"The zoo gets a huge financial boost to improve the facilities for both animals and visitors, Blackpool gets a much better tourist attraction and the council makes money out of the deal to invest in other services.
