IN response to J Charnock's experience of German bed and breakfast accommodation and his remark that most properties in and around Blackburn could not compete with ones he has used abroad, while I agree there are some B&Bs which may not be as good, there are others which would match up to any international B&B accommodation.

We have been running a four-diamond luxury B&B for the last six years. In April, 2002, we were given a 'Silver Award' after a quality control inspection for our high standard of cleanliness and comfort.

Later, we received a 'Silver Award' at the North West Tourist Board's Oscars, where we were nominated for the 'Tourism For All' Award for the whole region.

We have entertained Rovers supporters from all over, including two from Japan. When the Mayor of Blackburn, Australia, came on a civic visit, he and his family stayed with us.

We have also shown hospitality to competitors at the Kathleen Ferrier competition, enthusiasts visiting the Model Railway Exhibition, fans coming to King George's Hall and numerous guests coming to celebrate birthdays.

Of course, I agree that we need a large, quality, town centre hotel and the sooner the better. But let us not forget that there are small quality accommodation providers already in Blackburn and Darwen who can provide first-class hospitality of international standard as well as home-from-home comforts and a wealth of local knowledge.

Perhaps, Blackburn with Darwen, should take a leaf from the Ribble Valley Tourism book, which has stated that future editions of the official 'Where to stay' will only feature those establishments subject to quality control inspections.

By having an independent authority like the English Tourism Council checking all our advertised accommodation, we can be assured that visitors to the town will not get a poor impression. As Jacqui Livesey, the council's tourism officer has said: "There is a need for graded hotels so that the borough has facilities to take large parties of visitors.
