SUNDERLAND boss Howard Wilkinson is confident his side can inflict Blackburn's third defeat in a row tomorrow.

Both clubs go into the FA Cup fourth round replay on the back of dismal performances.

Successive league defeats by Southampton and Charlton have heightened fears of relegation to the Nationwide League for Sunderland.

While Rovers have managed just two shots during defeats by West Ham and Aston Villa.

Wilkinson believes the match at the Stadium of Light will provides his players with the perfect opportunity to bounce back.

He said: "We'll see just how damaging those two defeats have been when we face Blackburn. But I would back my players to surprise a few people. I have seen a change in their attitude and approach and it bodes well for the future. People have to remember that Charlton are flying at the moment and no team has a better away record in the league.

"Despite our bad luck we didn't capitulate and we didn't allow them to play to their strengths.

"The players went out from the first minute determined to tackle the problem we have at home and the performance gave me great encouragement."

Meanwhile, Jason McAteer will not be fit in time to face his former club tomorrow.

McAteer is close to making a return from a groin problem but he will not be risked.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder is now targeting next Monday's reserve team derby against Newcastle United at Gateshead Stadium.

McAteer's last Premiership appearance for Sunderland came in September.
