A DRUNKEN teenager who was arrested by police in the early hours had not had a very good day, Burnley Magistrates heard.

The court was told how jobless Daniel Lee Machin, 19, had found out mail for a vital appointment had been witheld and had later been assaulted.

He was upset and lost his temper - but chose to do it outside the police station and ended up arrested.

Machin, of Beaufort Street, Nelson, admitted threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months with £55 costs.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said an officer at Nelson police station heard obscenities coming from the back yard.

Machin was abusive, threatened to rip the officer's head off and became more aggressive when told to calm down. The defendant then fell across the bonnet of a car, swung out violently at the police and told them to get off him.

Paul Wood, defending, said Machin shared a house and had found out post containing an optician's appointment he badly needed had been witheld. He was then attacked by two Asian males when he went to the telephone.

He was upset, had a drink and could not recall much of what happened. He had no drink or drugs problems.
