Workers at a Haslingden carpet factory were evacuated after the fire alarm went off yesterday.

An external plant at Duralay, in Broadway, which separates oil from an extraction unit overheated and set the detectors off at 11.45am.

A carbon dioxide flooding system and a water drenching system kicked in.

Staff in the production plant were evacuated when the fire alarms sounded. Firefighters were called after workers reported hearing a bang when the system shut down.

Sub Officer Tom Simpson, said: "The system shut down the operation which prevented the plant from overheating. We were at the scene for about 20 minutes to make sure everything was all right."
