IN regard to the disgraceful firefighters' strike and, in particular to the scaremongering headlines on your report (LET, January 28), on Lancashire's Chief Fire Officer's claims that the Government's modernisation proposals would put lives at risk, they claim that they would like parity with other 'professions' whereas in reality all they want is parity of salaries.
Whenever the question of changes in conditions is raised, their leaders bluntly refuse to enter into negotiation.
I understand that among the many 'special' conditions of service that they enjoy are two-thirds of their final-salary pensions after 30 years' service.
If their pensions were made compatible with the professions, that only receive half salary after 40 years' service, then perhaps the increased salary demands could be accommodated.
