RESIDENTS and motorists told of their shock today after windows and vehicles were damaged in a rampage.

Shop windows were smashed and cars attacked during the incident in Abel Street, Daneshouse, Burnley, yesterday.

A police vehicle was also damaged after officers were called to the scene by people caught up in the drama.

Shabana Mahmood, of Colne Road, Burnley, said: "I was very frightened and shocked by what happened."

Mohammed Azam, who runs a barber shop in Abel Street, said a window was smashed at his shop and a man shouted abuse at customers.

Shop workers at Sobia Boutique Ladies' Wear, Lancashire Stores and Fashion Ghar said they did not know why they had been targeted.

Javed Iqbal, 40, of Lawn Street, said three windows on his car were smashed.

He said: "I was in a shop when I heard a noise. I went in the back yard to see what was going on."

Shabana Mahmood: "I was driving with my mother when my back windscreen was smashed.

"I don't know why it happened, but it was very frightening."

Javed Akbar, at Fashion Ghar, said: "I heard one of our windows being smashed. No one knows why it happened. If there had been someone inside the shop it could have been really serious. "

Cars in Hurtley Street and Elm Street were also targeted by the man.

Mrs Ahmed, the owner of Lancashire Stores, said: "He smashed two of our windows.

"It was lucky there was no one inside at the time."

A spokesman for Burnley Police said: "A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with affray, assault on police officers and criminal damage."

He was due to appear before magistrates in Burnley today.
