REGARDING speed cameras, I wonder if the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety would divulge what percentage of their increased 'take' has come from drivers, like your correspondent (Letters, March 4), who have been within an old speed limit but were caught out by a sudden lowering of it and an accompanying installation of a Gatso camera or a mobile unit shortly afterwards.

The same thing happened to me on the Eastern Avenue in Burnley last April. It seems that the measures catch previously law-abiding motorists, but are ineffective against the real menace on our roads -- namely, yobs who buy old bangers, fail to register them and then drive recklessly.

Could they also explain what contribution to road safety to eye-catching (and distracting) posters like the one opposite Colne police station serve!
