BURNLEY'S park rangers are targeting litter louts who spoil the town's public open spaces

Rangers will hand out £50 fixed penalty notices to anyone seen dropping litter.

Posters will be put up in parks and schools will be visited to reinforce the message.

The crackdown follows on from the introduction of £50 fines for dog walkers who don't clear up after their pets. Litter fines are already being handed out in Burnley town centre.

Councillor Charles Bullas, executive member for public protection and community safety said: "The council has spent many years encouraging people to take pride in their town and not to drop litter.

"We are now backing this up with fines. People who drop litter can expect to be fined or prosecuted by this council.

"We already do this in the town centre and it is working and we expect to achieve similar improvements in parks and open spaces."

Councillor Barry Guttridge, the council's executive member for leisure, added: "If people didn't drop litter we would be able to spend more time and money improving parks and providing better facilities."
