A SCHOOLBOY who has gone out of his way to help youngsters at a Penwortham football club has been honoured for his dedication and hard work.

James Brown,15, of Old Hey Croft, Kingsfold, has scooped a major community award for his team-building efforts at Kingsfold Youth Football Club, Penwortham.

Since joining the club in November last year the All Hallows pupil has given up his spare time to show younger members the skills of playing football -- from tackling to scoring goals.

Now his kindness has earned him the Vaughan Seddon award -- an accolade given by South Ribble Borough Council to honour unsung heroes in memory of a former youth and community worker who died four years ago. James said: "I'm pleased to have won it although really this award is for all of the people at the club as they all deserve it."

The Manchester United fan was one of four people to win recognition for his selfless efforts. Others included Lisa McFarlane, for her work as a drugs mentor at Walton-le-Dale Youth and Community Club and Tim Grose, for his efforts at Wade Hall Community Centre, Leyland.

A final unsung hero was pensioner Nellie Rhodes, Much Hoole, who has raised almost £30,000 for St Catherine's Hospice, Lostock Hall, through coach trips and other events.

Mrs Rhodes also picked up the Joe Shultz Trophy, presented by the Disability and Information Service, for her work with disabled people.
