A MASSIVE housing plan for Thornton Cleveleys could end up in the High Court after developers and the local council were told the new homes were unnecessary.

Developers, NPL Estates Ltd, planned to build 510 new houses at Poolfoot Farm, off Heys Street.

But, following opposition from the Thornton Action Group and a public inquiry, the scheme was blocked by the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott.

Mr Prescott says the council has not demonstrated why it needs to release the prominent 'greenfield' site for housing and claims the proposed estate would harm the local landscape and disrupt the free flow of traffic.

He also argues that the development does not form part of an 'agreed approach' to regenerating the area.

Eric Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow based NPL, said: "Obviously, we are disappointed at the decision, but this does not lessen our commitment to the development and the area.

"We are the largest brownfield site owner in the area and are absolutely committed to establishing a productive site which contributes to, and enhances, the community."

Rodger Wightman, acting head of paid service at Wyre Borough Council, said: "The council will now wish to take time to read the detailed report which explains the reasons behind the decision to refuse planning permission."

Both the developers and the council have the right to appeal against the decision and challenge the grounds for the decision in the High Court.
