ROVERS winger Keith Gillespie could be heading for Manchester City this summer.

Kevin Keegan is the latest manager to be linked with a move for the Northern Ireland international, who is set to quit Ewood at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Rangers are all thought to be interested in the 28-year-old winger who will be available on a Bosman free.

But Keegan could be in pole position for his signature after the pair worked successfully together during their time at Newcastle United.

It was Keegan who took Gillespie to the North East after insisting he was included in the deal which saw Andy Cole move to Manchester United.

And the speedy wide-man went on to become a big hit on Tyneside where he helped to lead the Magpies to the brink of the title.

Now the pair could be reunited again after Keegan has threatened to ring the changes at City this summer and a player with Gillespie's flair would certainly appeal to the Maine Road chief as he looks to build a side capable of challenging for Europe next season.

But Keegan could face a battle for his signature with a number of other clubs also thought to be monitoring the winger's situation closely.

Rangers boss Alex McLeish is one of the managers to have run the rule over Gillespie in recent weeks and a move to Ibrox would hold great appeal for a player who grew up supporting the Gers.

Rovers chief Graeme Souness certainly believes the winger could do a job in Scotland, even after deciding against offering him a new deal to keep him at Ewood.

"Gillespie would do a great job in Scottish football but that's obviously a decision for Alex McLeish to make," said the Rovers boss.

Meanwhile, Souness has now officially confirmed that he is chasing Rangers star Lorenzo Amoruso, as we revealed over a week ago.

Souness recently handed John Williams a list of five players that he would like to add to his squad in the summer and the Italian defender is one of them.

"I am interested in several players and it is fair to say that Amoruso is one of them," said Souness.

"I have a list of five possible targets and Frank de Boer was another name I was considering because I need an experienced centre half to play beside the young boys we have in defence."

In the meantime, young defender Jay McEveley was due to have a scan on his hamstring today after limping out of Monday night's reserve game at Sunderland.

With Vratislav Gresko ruled out for the rest of the season, Souness is still hopeful McEveley might be fit to feature against West Brom on Saturday.
