WHEN it comes to friendship Dot Ainsworth is double tops.

The Leigh darter has organised a competition in memory of county player Joan Sanders who recently died at the age of 63.

The individual ladies' charity competition for The Joan Sanders Memorial Cup, donated by her family, will become an annual event and proceeds will be divided between Pendlebury Children's Hospital and Joan's grand-daughter, Louise Sanders, who was treated for cancer there.

The event on Saturday will throw off at 1pm at the Peake Fitness Club, Firs Lane, Leigh, and the entry fee is £2.

Organiser Dot, of Wigan Road, Leigh, said Joan, who lived in Crankwood Road, was a super person and she had arranged the event because she wanted people to remember her.

Joan, who has a twin, Jean Crooks, played in the Leigh League for 28 years for teams including Plank Lane Workingmen's Club, Plank Lane Catholic Club and the New Inn.

She also played Super League for Leigh and reached the county squad.

Dot said: "Her family will be at the event, I hope the first of many in her memory."

The format is 501, straight start and finish on a double. Registration is from 12.30pm and can be made on the day or by contacting Dot on 01942 517282.
