A COUNCILLOR has called on the public to shop fly tippers targeting an Accrington street.

Electricity Street, near the Asda superstore, has already been the site of two groups of travellers setting up camp this year.

Hyndburn Council cleared the land on each occasion but Councillor Malcolm Pritchard was horrified to see it strewn with rubble again last week.

Now council chiefs investigating the incident said they will prosecute the culprits if they find out who did it.

"There are two big piles of rubbish. They weren't there last week but they were there on Wednesday," said Coun Pritchard.

The debris includes carpets, televisions, old barbecue stuff, and paving slabs.

Travellers who set up camp on the street left gas cylinders when they moved on.

"That's all been tidied up but now this has all appeared again it just seems wrong. People want a decent Hyndburn and others come and tip. It's a disgrace.

"We haven't a clue who's doing it but it has to be someone using a wagon, there's so much of it. Not a little wagon either.

"We will have to clear it up again," said Coun Pritchard.

Steve Todd, head of environmental health at Hyndburn Council, said: "We are investigating it and we will take whatever action we can to find out who has dumped the stuff because we are talking about a lorry load of stuff so we want to see if there is the opportunity to prosecute someone.

"We will also have to arrange to move it. Fly tipping generally is a big problem, particularly furniture but we offer a free collection service."

Fly tipping costs taxpayers £100million a year in clean-up operations across the country.

Anyone who sees anyone tipping in the area is asked to ring 01254 385021 and speak to Tom Fearan, the council's cleansing supervisor.
