PUPILS boarded a supersonic bus for a learning trip on transport.

Leigh Central Primary School children took a fun look at the topic as part of a programme of projects designed to raise awareness of the issue.

Actress Clare McGlinn led two days of interactive workshops and activities and the highlight was the story of the supersonic bus, which involved the children acting out transport modes, looking at how they operate together and their effects on the environment.

GMPTE have sponsored four artists to visit schools and develop projects intended to complement the work of the Leigh Education Action Zone.

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority's Wigan and Leigh spokesperson, Cllr John Hilton, went along to the school and said: "It's great to see the children being entertained and learning at the same time.

"We want to encourage youngsters to think about transport and the environment and obviously this needs to be done in a way that is enjoyable for them."

The pupils also worked on GMPTE produced 'Kids Packs', in which one of the highlights is a bookmark printed with a poem by another artist taking part in the project - Greater Manchester's premier poet, Lemn Sissay, who was brought up in Atherton.

The poem 'Catching Numbers' is about Lemn's own early bus journeys on the 32 service, and was specially commissioned by the executive.
