IT will be hot on the streets of Atherton on Saturday - and that's a promise.

A totally tropical free carnival will hit the town between 11am and 3pm and will be the first of a series throughout the borough.

This year's summer festival organisers have organised a fun packed festival with some of the best street arts around at the market site.

It follows on the heels of last year's hugely successful MayDayze festival.

Encourage

It is hoped that the first Hot on The Streets event will encourage more people to become involved in community carnivals.

The project is a joint scheme between Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and the council and is being supported by the neighbourhood renewal fund.

On the Atherton bill will be music from The Real Macaws. This top UK festival troupe bring the Latin spirit alive with everything from samba to bossa nova with performances inspired by the music of the Rio carnival, New Orleans' mardi gras and a Spanish fiesta.

Pavement paint specialists Urban Canvas will also provide top quality street level art works.

There will be home-grown fun from a range of local dance and art craft groups and the community arts organisation Action Factory will be using a variety of media, including fabrics and banner making, to get the residents involved.

Arts development officer Chris Wyatt said: 'The theme of the day is hot and tropical and that's what we hope the weather will be.

"Shops have promised to join in the fun and decorate their fronts on the theme. This is a real celebration of arts on the doorstep and we are encouraging people to be a part of that celebration."
