LONG-SERVING and respected RSPCA inspector Brian Oxley has retired -- bringing an extraordinary 150 year family connection with the Society to an end.

Brian, 65, became an inspector in 1970 and spent his entire career covering the Bury, Radcliffe, Rossendale and Haslingden patch. His retirement marks the end of an era for both the RSPCA and the Oxley family.

Brian followed his two brothers, Bruce and John, into the society, where they both worked as inspectors for about 20 years.

Their father, Frank, was also an RSPCA chief inspector, while their uncle, William, was an RSPCA superintendent. They both worked for the charity for about 35 years.

Brian's first official appointment, in August 1970, was to introduce himself to the local RSPCA branch.

His final official appointment last night involved addressing the same local volunteer group -- the Bury (Lancs) and District RSPCA branch.

Brian today recalled fond memories of his long career with the animal welfare charity.

"I have met and worked with some terrific characters -- of both the human and animal variety! The staff and other inspectors are a great bunch and have always been on hand to offer help and guidance.

"The job would be impossible without the help and support of family, friends and colleagues. I thank everyone who has helped me over the years."

Brian has helped thousands of animals during his career, including domestic pets, wildlife, farm animals -- and three elephants.

He laughed: "The circus was coming through town one day when a trailer carrying three elephants clipped a kerb and overturned. I had no idea how we were going to get them upright -- but we did it with the help of the fire brigade."

Brian added: "I've always tried to be a fair inspector. I never wanted to take cases to court unless I really had to. I preferred to have a quiet chat, without animosity, in the hope that an owner would improve the conditions. In many cases, that approach worked."

Brian is married to Julia and the couple have two children, Jayne and Richard, and two grandchildren.

RSPCA North West superintendent Bill Cottingham, said: "Brian's retirement marks the end of an era. The Oxley family have, between them, spent almost 150 years working for improvements in animal welfare. Brian has been a well-respected member of the local community and we all wish him well in his retirement.

"I am sure he will retain contact with and offer support to the local RSPCA branch."
