AN annual cardiac screening service takes place on June 21 to detect heart abnormalities which endanger lives of young people.

Cardiac Risk in the Young will offer ECGs to people aged 14 to 35 at Darwen Access Point, Duckworth Street. The day-long event is in memory of Neil Wickers and David Staff, from Darwen and Hoddlesden, who died as a result of undiagnosed heart defects.

The victims' memorial fund recently received £500 from the Mayor's Charity Fund.

Neil's mother, Irene Wickers, of Cyprus Street, said: "The money will help pay for the mobile screening in June."

Family fund-raising has allowed the charity to carry out nationwide screening events since 1995.

Pre-booked appointments are required for the day. To book, contact Irene Wickers on 01254 707895.
