IF Blackburn Council is the exception to the country-wide rule on planning permission for food outlets (LET, May 26), then might I suggest that Blackburn could possibly be out of step?

I don't want a long walk away from the shops if I want a coffee, to the 'pedestrianised' area where I might stumble on cobbles or be knocked over.

As a fairly recent resident of Blackburn, might I also suggest calling the M65 service station 'Blackburn with Darwen'?

Finally, as an outsider, reading your newspaper to 'tune in' to what is happening in Blackburn, my impressions from the letters pages are of mutual dislike between the people of Blackburn and Darwen.

Councillors who haven't a clue what people want or how to attract people to the town, a protracted discussion on the existence of God (when many of the local population is Muslim) and bewilderment at the rise of the BNP.

Some sharp focusing of the important local issues is required of the people of Blackburn and Darwen and of the councillors they elect.
