RESIDENTS in Hyndburn are being issued with tips on how to keep noise down in the run-up to National Noise Action Day, which aims to highlight the misery noise nuisance can cause.

Among the tips issued by Hyndburn Council to keep neighbours happy are leaving a key to house alarms with someone registered with the police or environmental health in case they go off accidentally while the house is empty. Muffle music by moving speakers away from partition walls, floors and ceilings. Amplified music or sound is the most common cause of complaints.

If you have a party, warn neighbours beforehand, and consider inviting them. Keep windows and doors shut and if someone complains, turn it down.

Make sure dogs have enough exercise so they don't become bored and start barking; operate washing machines and other noisy appliances at sensible hours to reduce disturbance; and do DIY jobs when it will cause the least disruption to neighbours, and warn them in advance.
