THE Former head girl of Oakhill College, in Whalley, is planning to spend three months in Cambodia -- thanks to the help of current students.

The country is one of the most heavily mined areas in the world, with some estimates running as high as 10 million mines.

Three decades of war have taken a severe toll on the local people: some 40,000 of them live as amputees, one of the highest rates in the world.

Now, former head girl Mary Whowell, is planning to spend three months there working at a rehabilitation centre for the survivors of landmine explosions.

To support her trip, more than 80 of the senior school pupils, along with six staff members, recently undertook a 10-mile sponsored walk.

They set off from Oakhill via Spring Wood to the Nick o' Pendle -- making the most of some fine weather.

The Nursery and Preparatory school children also organised their own sponsored walks to help support Mary's trip to Cambodia.
