St Peter's Primary School are the inaugural Sports Hall Athletics champions after running and leaping to glory.

The Darwen school clocked up a mighty 646 points in the first ever indoor track and field contest to beat St James by just three points.

The competition, held at Darwen Leisure Centre, was split in to two age groups with a total of nine schools taking part.

St Peter's won the year four and five section, clocking up enough points to be crowned overall champions.

St James were third with 617 points, five ahead of Holy Trinity, while St Lukes with St Phillips were fifth with 530 points.

St Barnabas and St Paul's were convincing winners in the younger age group, beating second-placed Brookhouse by 87 points.

St Michael and St John were third with 408 points and St Silas were fourth with 389 points.

Pupils, who had taken part in a taster session the week before, took part in events including speed bounce, indoor javelin, standing triple jump and a series of relay races.

The event was funded by the School Sports Co-ordinator Scheme with the aim of re-launching Sports Hall Athletics in junior and secondary schools in the borough.

A total of 16 junior sports leaders from Beardwood High School acted as marshals on the day.

The event was run by school sports co-oridinators Sally Jones and Fay Smith.

Fay said: "We were delighted with the way Sports Hall Athletics has been received in primary schools across the borough.

"The aim now is to introduce it in to secondary schools and one of our aims is to form athletic clubs in each school."
