A GLOBE-trotting Bury student is to jet off on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Costa Rica this summer thanks to Lancashire brewers Daniel Thwaites.

Teenager Robert Steers, a student at Holy Cross Sixth Form College, will head off to Central America in late July for a two-week trip sponsored by the renowned Thwaites' Travel Scholarship.

Thwaites have funded the Travel Scholarship, run in conjunction with the Experiment for International living, for 44 years.

Under the supervision of group leaders Fiona Alecock and Sharon Connery, the group will leave from Manchester Airport on July 23, returning from San Jose Delhi on August 7.

As well as seeing many of the historic sights, including the Tortuguero National Park and a boat trip into the rain forest, 17-year-old Robert, from Greenmount, will spend time living and working alongside Indian families.

Thwaites' president John Yerburgh, great great grandson of Daniel Thwaites and founder of the Travel Scholarship, believes the scheme is a vital step in developing cultural attitudes among young people.

He said: "So many young people from our region have benefited since the programme was launched in the late 1950s, mainly through hands-on experience which encourages them to appreciate and respect cultures from all over the world.

"The trip to Costa Rica has the promise of being one of our best-ever adventures."
