JUST which bran tub has the Europhile Gary Arthurs (Letters, May 29) had his head in for the last 30 years?

We were told that trade and industry would benefit from membership of the European 'Union' but what has happened?

Steel making has gone, as have the coal industry, ship and aircraft building - with agriculture and fisheries following suit and even electronics now on the way out.

If we give Europe the pound, too, it will milk us dry to pay for its bankrupt welfare system.

The whole system was set up to support France and Germany. What have we gained? Golden Delicious apples all the same size and shape with no taste, Dutch bacon at £4 per gallon and German butter too hard to spread. We have given enough and received nothing worthwhile in return, so it is time to call it a day.

Just one final thought. After causing so much damage to our long and successful heritage should not Ted Heath be belatedly charged with treasopn.
