THE Turnpike Community Theatre company is busy rehearsing a modern day version of Shakespeare's most famous tale of love and tragedy.

The Romeo and Juliet version written by Jo Shepherd and directed by Neil Gredecki with Jo is set against a background of today's gang culture with families torn apart by drugs and violence.

A contemporary piece of theatre has been created in which some of the original Shakespearean text is used alongside the language of today.

Working with Turnpike is a Wigan band led by Neil Fallows which helps to create the atmosphere and tension as the play unfolds.

It runs to Friday 13 at 7.30pm at the XII Apostles' Club, Westleigh Lane, Leigh, and it is suitable for children aged 10 and over accompanied by parents. Tickets at £3.50 are available on 01942 603195.
