AS PART of our Pride of East Lancashire Campaign we are searching for the area's children of courage.

When people think of that phrase they often think of children who have suffered a serious illness or have carried out a brave action for someone else.

But there are many other children whose bravery goes unoticed as it is often behind closed doors.

In the UK there are seven million carers, 51,000 of those are under 18.

Last month 50 children from the North West were given knighthoods by Camelot theme park for their selfless actions.

Josie Louise Lawton, 13, of Colne, one of the lucky winners, has helped look after her family since her mother Kirsty was diagnosed with cervical cancer a couple of years ago.

Gill Rigg, Head of Children and Families for Lancashire Social Services, said: "There are seven million people in the UK who provide an invaluable service to the community by caring for relatives, partners, friends and children.

"According to the latest national census, it is estimated that there could be as many as 175,000 carers under the age of 18 in the UK looking after their ill, elderly or disabled relatives.

"Carers of all ages do an excellent job. However, young people particularly deserve recognition for their contribution and hard work, and most importantly, deserve the greatest level of support."

This week is national carers week and organisations throughout the country are working to raise awareness of the work of carers, especially young carers.

Mrs Rigg said: "Lancashire Social Services provides a range of community support services for carers of all ages and all circumstances.

"These services include seven Young Carers Projects across the county, funded by Social Services, to provide locally based advice, information and support including opportunities for short breaks.

"Carers Week plays an important part in reaching out to young or other 'hidden' carers who are not aware of the support and services available to them, as well as raising awareness with the general public, professionals and politicians."
