PENDLE'S executive members have approved the the call for CCTV in Earby, Barnoldswick and Barrowford -- but have decided to wait for confirmation on possible capital funding for the scheme before agreeing to meet the revenue costs.

A decision made at the last Executive meeting in May, to consider the matter as a budget growth item once the funding had been given, was called in by the Liberal Democrat group a short time later.

At the time the group had none of its members on the decision-making committee, after a row over how many Liberal Democrat councillors should be appointed, and could therefore not vote on the issue.

They have since been allowed to appoint three of their councillors to the executive and the vote on CCTV costs was retaken this week.

The outcome was the same despite the Liberal Democrats believing that if the council agreed to covering the costs in advance there would be a better chance of the area receiving external funding, as opposed to last time when certain areas such as Barnoldswick lost out in the bidding.

Labour councillor Frank Clifford said: "We have got to have a system of principal. Funding for CCTV in Barrowford, Earby and Barnoldswick should happen in exactly the same way as it did in Nelson, Colne and Brierfield."

The proposed schemes would include 12 cameras in Barnoldswick which would cost £276,000, six in Earby costing £138,000 and five cameras in Barrowford costing £115,000.

Pendle Council currently meets the £109,000 revenue costs of monitoring 33 cameras in Colne, Nelson and Brierfield.

The additional 23 cameras would cost approximately £76,000 per year to monitor and keep in repair at current prices.

There is currently no confirmation that funding will be secured for the latest schemes or any indication as to when the systems could be up and running.
